Conference venue
The earliest Māori name for Wellington is Te Upoko o te Ika a Maui – which means 'the head of Maui's fish' – stemming from the Māori legend that Polynesian navigator Maui fished up the North Island. You can find out more about Wellington's early Māori and European history on Te Ara The Encyclopedia of New Zealand. For more information on Wellington, visit www.wellingtonnz.com. Wellington and VenuesWellington's winter climate may be unexpected. Please be prepared if venturing out of the venue. We recommend a layered approach, as the conference rooms will be as comfortable as possible, but it will be winter outside. Travel/Transfers/ParkingTransfers from the Airport are by commercial shuttle or taxi. Rates for the Shuttles approx $18 and for Taxi approx $35. There is no transport provided by the hotels. A taxi stand is outside the James Cook Grand Chancellor Hotel foyer. Parking is available in two commercial parking areas. One is in the James Cook building accessed via the hotel entrance, and the other is the Clifton Terrace Car Park accessed approx 200 metres towards parliament on The Terrace. Both have special rates for early bird parking before 9.30am. Living in guests will receive parking in the building for a small charge. Refer to the concierge on arrival. Transport will be provided to the Parliamentary Reception on Thursday at 5.15pm and will return to the hotel at 7.15pm. Conference rates at the James Cook Hotel apply from the night of 2 August and special cheaper room rates may apply on weekend nights.
